On October 8 local time, Indonesian President Prabowo visited the Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in North Maluku Province and attended the groundbreaking and commercial operation ceremony for the park's nickel downstream industry project, held in conjunction with the first export of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Also in attendance were Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transformation and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan, and Chairman of the National Economic Council Luhut. Zhou Kan, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia; Xiang Guangda, Chairman of the Board of Tsingshan Holding Group; and Chen Xuehua, Chairman of Huayou Holding Group, were also present.

In his remarks, President Prabowo extended greetings to Chairman Xiang Guangda and Chairman Chen Xuehua, and expressed gratitude to the domestic and foreign enterprises and investors participating in Indonesia's industrial development. He spoke highly of Indonesia–China cooperation, thanking investors for their partnership and trust in Indonesia, which have brought the two countries closer and delivered greater benefits to their peoples. He stated that no matter where an investment comes from, once it lands in Indonesia, the Indonesian government will respect it; investors who come to Indonesia, cooperate with Indonesia, and help Indonesia will be regarded as brothers and sisters and protected like family. He emphasized that the first export of EV batteries is a significant milestone in Indonesia's downstream industrial development, and that Indonesia will continue to advance its downstream industry strategy. Enterprises should prioritize environmental protection, workplace safety, and waste management, and promote the sustainable development of the industry in a responsible manner.

The ceremony also marked the groundbreaking, production launch, and first export of new energy vehicle batteries for the nickel industry ecosystem at the Weda Bay Industrial Park, with President Prabowo personally pressing the launch button. Chairman Chen Xuehua joined the other guests on stage to witness the moment.

Indonesian Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan briefed the audience on the investment, construction, industrial development, and employment results delivered by the Weda Bay Industrial Park. He stated that the new project will help Indonesia build a complete EV battery supply chain ecosystem, and that such deep downstream integration will ultimately help Indonesia achieve full industrialization.

The event launched a total of 11 downstream industry projects, of which 4 officially entered commercial operation and 7 broke ground, with a combined total investment of approximately US$10.2 billion, spanning nickel-based battery materials, EV batteries, the aluminum industry, and new energy equipment manufacturing, among other sectors. The simultaneous launch of the first EV battery export signals new progress for Indonesia in deepening the processing of nickel resources, extending the new energy industry chain, and raising domestic industrial added value.
Construction of the Weda Bay Industrial Park began in August 2018. Jointly invested and developed by Tsingshan Holding Group, Huayou Cobalt, and other partners, the park has now formed a complete industry chain spanning from mining to battery materials production, attracting a cumulative investment of approximately US$20 billion and creating more than 100,000 direct jobs.

▲Huafei Hydrometallurgical Smelting Project, Weda Bay Industrial Park
As a key player in Indonesia's nickel downstream industry development, Huayou has built an integrated green manufacturing base for lithium battery materials at the Weda Bay Industrial Park, encompassing such industrial segments as Huafei hydrometallurgical smelting, Huaxiang nickel-cobalt refining, and Huaneng ternary precursor manufacturing, forming an industry chain that runs from upstream nickel resource processing to downstream new energy battery materials production. The completion of this base has further driven local deep processing of nickel resources and extended the industry chain, providing important support for the development of Indonesia's new energy materials industry. Going forward, Huayou will continue to uphold the principle of "co-building through cooperation, winning the future together," fully leverage its integrated industrial advantages, and work hand in hand with global partners to promote the high-quality, sustainable development of the new energy materials industry.
